Top 5 Home Safety Tips to Prevent Theft

Did you know that there are over 3 million burglaries each year? Many of those burglaries have happened while the homeowner was home. This can be a scary prospect, which it is also the reason why taking measures to make your home safer is so important. A simple home theft can result in lost assets and you may also lose something that has sentimental value, which can never be replaced. Luckily, there are many¬†home safety tips and tricks to keep burglars at bay and to prevent thefts from happening in the first place. If you don’t want to be a victim, you should make home security a serious priority. Here are the top five home safety tips to prevent theft.

  1. Keep a safety light on. Whether you are at home sleeping or out of town, you want to keep at least one safety light on. Usually, you want to keep the light on in a room you would usually use. To save energy – and to prevent a fire – you want to make sure that you use an LED lightbulb. Giving the illusion that you are home will give burglars the message that your house is not worth the trouble.
  2. Create a coalition with your closest neighbors. If you live in a cul-de-sac community, one of the best ways to prevent theft is to get your neighbors in on the action. If one neighbor sees something fishy, he or she can call the police to investigate. The same goes if you see something suspicious. Creating a vigilant environment could reduce the theft rates in your community by a significant rate. One of the best ways to get your neighbors together to discuss a coalition is to have a weekend barbecue or event. You may find that your neighbors are your greatest allies.
  3. Keep your doors, windows and garage locked. This may seem like an incredibly obvious home safety tip, but the truth is that many people don’t keep their windows and doors locked at night. Not only do you want to check to make sure your house is locked up and secure, you also want to make sure that your garage isn’t ajar. If your garage is not automatic, locking your garage at night is incredibly important.
  4. Keep your items in a safe. If you have particularly expensive jewelry – jewelry that includes diamonds and rare stones – you want to keep these items in a locked, fireproof safe. Most thieves don’t have the know-how to break into safes, so you can rest assured that your precious items will be protected. If you want to take it a step further, you could hide the safe somewhere inconspicuous.
  5. Never keep a large amount of cash inside your home. Having too much cash in your home will attract thieves. Most of these burglars are incredibly experienced and know exactly where people hide these items. So, you want to leave your cash in the bank – not under your mattress or in that cookie jar in the kitchen.
